Flashbacks V.1 - The Rock Edition:
Production Notes

We’ve teased it off and on over the summer, but we’re proud to say it’s finally here – our first-ever Full Tilt Remix special edition, Flashbacks V.1 – The Rock Edition

Our Flashbacks line of CDs will be a semi-regular series, with several issues to be released each year with each disc based roughly on a central theme or genre of music.

As you glance through the following production notes, some may be wondering what exactly prompted the musical line-up we have featured.  The answer is simple: there really haven’t been that many remix service CDs that have covered this particular area of rock music.  And in speaking with numerous club and mobile deejays over the past year or so, we came to learn that there was a bit of demand for remixes like those featured on this release.

So without further adieu, let’s see what’s on tap for our first Flashbacks installment…

01. GREEN DAY – “Brain Stew” (75 BPM)
First up is an alternative radio staple from the mid-90’s, “Brain Stew” by Green Day. Truth be told, this remix is actually one that Marcus produced several years ago for a weekly radio show he was producing at the time. He gave the song a slight bit of restructuring, as well as some additional percussion during the intro and outro, and the end result is a mix-ready version from one of the biggest acts in alternative rock.
02. BECK – “Loser” (85 BPM)
Another alternative staple from the mid-90’s, Marcus hooks us up with a simple reworking of Beck’s “Loser”. Using elements largely taken from the original song, Marcus gives us a clean intro that drops right into the chorus and also sprinkles in a few stutter and echo effects throughout the remix.
03. BEASTIE BOYS – “So What’cha Want” (85 BPM)
Often overlooked amidst the stream of ever-popular cuts from their breakthrough 1986 album “License To Ill”, we opted to give the Beastie’s 1992 hit “So What’cha Want” the Full Tilt treatment for this release. While it isn’t necessarily an obvious pick for a “rock” CD, the more we listened to the song the more we realized how true its vibe is to the core theme of these release. Marcus adds some additional percussion to the original track, as well as a few well-placed vocal samples from another Beastie classic, to deliver a remix that’s ready to move crowds and pack dance-floors.
04. OASIS – “Wonderwall” (87 BPM)
When the brothers Gallagher weren’t busy arguing, they and the rest of Oasis were quite capable of crafting some memorable tunes, and “Wonderwall” easily qualifies as one of their best. Ben delivers a truly awesome remix, adding a great backbeat to the original song along with a number of nicely done vocal effects near the intro and outro. Add “Wonderwall” to the stable of classics that you the deejay can now easily drop in the mix!
05. DEF LEPPARD – “Pour Some Sugar On Me” (88 BPM)
It wouldn’t be a rock CD if we didn’t throw in at least one pop-metal anthem from the 1980’s! For this release, we chose Def Leppard’s 1988 classic, “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, and Ben gives us a reworking that’s very true to the original but structured perfectly for deejay use. This one’s almost a total no-brainer for your old school rock sets, so feel free to play it loud and play it often!
06. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS – “Give It Away” (92 BPM)
RHCP have a sound and style that’s as distinctive as distinctive can be, and the vocal and musical styling of “Give It Away” helped deliver them many a new fan back in the day. Marcus freshens up this early 90’s classic with a clean intro and outro as well as a solid backbeat that really complements the original rhythm of the song. Deejays everywhere can now easily work this gem in to the mix!
07. SUBLIME – “What I Got” (95 BPM)
Released some ten years ago, the music found on Sublime’s self-titled release is still a staple of the alternative radio and club scene. With “What I Got” no doubt being the biggest single from the album in question, we just had to tweak it up Full Tilt style for this release. Marcus’ remix is based on the album version but incorporates many elements from the “reprise” version (such as the filtered bass found towards the beginning and end of his remix). With just a little bit of restructuring, the final result is a solid reworking that’ll surely keep your crowds moving.
08. ALICE IN CHAINS – “Man In The Box” (105 BPM)
One of the many bands to break out of the early 90’s Seattle rock scene, Alice In Chains scored big with the release of this song. “Man In The Box” gets a thorough reworking from Marcus; in fact, nearly every kick and snare in the original song had to be time-corrected to get the rhythm to stick to a solid 105 tempo. With some additional rhythm elements and a few filtering effects, “Man In The Box” is now a mix-ready classic for your next rock set.
09. THE OFFSPRING – “Self Esteem” (105 BPM)
With the first release in our new series comes the addition of a new producer to the FTR ranks; our good friend DJ Perry tackled a bit of a beast here with The Offspring’s “Self Esteem”. Much like the Alice In Chains record, Perry had to do quite a bit of tweaking and correcting to get the tempo to stick (try beat-mixing against the original album version and you’ll see what we mean!), but he got the job done quite admirably, adding some backing percussion, a few stutter effects, and the always-needed intro and outro along the way.
10. NIRVANA – “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (117 BPM)
We continue the introductions with the addition of our good friend John Anthony, who makes his FTR debut with his reworking of the Nirvana anthem “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Over the years, there have been numerous remixes of this classic that have taken the tune in any number of directions. John’s remix is very faithful to the original song, but he does gives us a few subtle echo and filtering effects (using various guitar parts from the track) as well as a nice healthy intro and outro - perfect for those deejays who like to run their beat-mixes a tad longer.
11. JOURNEY – “Don’t Stop Believin” (122 BPM)
It’s amazing that some two decades have passed since the original release of this massive Journey hit, and yet we at FTR still hear deejays working parts of this one in to their sets now more than ever! Hell, it just didn’t seem right to not have something from the early 80’s included in this release – “Don’t Stop Believin” fit the bill perfectly. Marcus leaves the original structure of the song intact and gives us a nice 4/4 rhythm to back this rock anthem.
12. BLUR – “Song 2” (129 BPM)
Blur’s a band that’s a bit difficult to define musically at times, but there’s no mistaking the power of the riffs heard in the late 90’s hit “Song 2”. Short as the original version of the song is, Marcus stretches things out a bit, giving a nice 32/32 intro and outro as well as some clever filtering effects that really help build up and build down the heart of the remix itself. Perfect for your next peak hour 90’s set!

SUBLIME BREAK (Loop Track) 95 BPM
ESTEEM BREAK (Loop Track) 105 BPM
To round out our first Flashbacks release, we added a few loop tracks for good measure. Marcus hits us up with some beats from his Sublime remix, and Perry does the same with a bed from his Offspring remix.

The first of many more to come down the road, we hope you enjoy Flashbacks Volume 1 – The Rock Edition.  Truth be told, this wasn’t the easiest issue of FTR that we’ve assembled to date, but it was certainly one of the most satisfying, and we’re confident that you’ll come to love this disc as much as we do!

Up next from Full Tilt Remix will be the release of Volume 6 in our regular series (coming in just a week or two) as well as the release of Volume 7, slated to drop in mid-November!

Thanks again to one and all for the continued support!
